The Public Service Leadership Program (PSLP) is a multi-institutional effort led by the UNC School of Social Work, in partnership with NCDHHS and the Social Work Coalition on NC Workforce Development, a group of 25 universities and colleges across North Carolina. The PSLP is designed to strengthen the social work workforce by combining academic training, leadership development and public service placements – especially in regions with understaffed social services, mental health and community programs.
Why it Matters in North Carolina
The demand for social workers in public systems is growing, but the workforce often lacks support, certification pipelines, or leadership pathways. The PSLP will create a sustained pipeline of social workers committed to public service and build leadership capacity in organizations across the state. Engaging high schools, community colleges, and universities will promote interest in social work among more students, supporting long-term workforce diversity.
How it Works
The initiative will begin with a one-year planning period, followed by a pilot year and a three-year testing phase. Students may apply to participate beginning in March 2026.
Participants will receive specialized leadership training, mentorship, field placements in public service agencies (e.g. mental health, child welfare, I/DD), and professional development supports. Agencies will be able to partner with PSLP to host interns, offer career pathways, and invest in retention strategies.
More information on how to find participating institutions, program timeline and application details will be added as the program moves forward.
