Nursing homes are health care facilities that provide long-term nursing or recovery care for at least three older adults who require 24-hour nursing supervision and care.

Residents and their families pay a substantial part of nursing home costs. Medicaid typically pays for about half of the total cost of nursing home care. Medicare and private long-term care insurance pays only a fraction of the cost.
